| Right at the heart of Egilsstadir – east Iceland’s capital – the three-star, three-storey hotel has almost doubled in size, thanks to a new wing added in June 2004. The extension has been built on two levels to accommodate Iceland’s east coast ‘boom’, which has seen a big increase in visitors in recent years. Extra rooms now occupy the first floor, above a brand new conference centre for up to 120 people and housing all the latest communications technology. The Herad is a relaxing retreat with plenty of room for creature comforts, a first class restaurant serving delicious local dishes, like the famous reindeer steaks, and a ‘midnight sun’ balcony bar’. The 60 stylish rooms are all beautifully designed, with luxurious fixtures and fittings, and all come with parquet flooring, satellite TV, telephone and hairdryer. Local attractions Hallormsstaður – Iceland’s biggest forest – magnificent coastal and mountain scenery, the picturesque port of Seyðisfjörður, the ancient ‘elves’ capital’ at Álfaborg and the meandering river Lagarfljót with its mythical water monster.
